MuniSight is proud to announce that the winner of the 2018 Municipal Innovation Award is the District of Tumbler Ridge, for their joint Global Geopark brand project. The District of Tumbler Ridge, traditionally a small mining community in British Columbia, faced a challenging situation when coal operations shut down in 2014. Undeterred, they found a way to diversify their economy using a recent UNESCO Global Geopark designation, entrepreneurial thinking, and some marketing ingenuity. Check out their story below.
“The District of Tumbler Ridge faced some incredible challenges and brought an entrepreneurial mindset to find a solution. We love to celebrate governments who are focused on innovative thinking and we are proud to announce the District of Tumbler Ridge as the winner of the 2018 Municipal Innovation Award,” says Quinten Griffiths, President of MuniSight.
In 2014 Tumbler Ridge lost its major industry and faced being shut down by British Columbia. In 2017, they had grown tourism by 700% and had shifted their economic dependence from coal.

As a part of the prize, the District of Tumbler Ridge will receive $2000 from MuniSight to donate towards a charity of their choice within their jurisdiction.
